A Case of the Week

Case 6

A nineteen-year-old female came to our hospital suffering from left facial paralysis. She realized mouth-water after eating and drinking, and impaired taste a few days ago. At the time of out-patient consulting, droopy eyelids, excessive tears, facial paralysis, facial muscle twitching and drooping corner of mouth at her left face were found. She underwent Gd-enhanced MRI for ensuring Bell’s palsy and ruling out other diseases causing facial palsy.

The facial nerve composes of several segments: Meatal segment; Labirinthene segment; Geniculate ganglion; tympanic segment; Mastoid segment. In case of Bell’s palsy, the facial nerve receives marked Gd-enhancement. However, which part of the facial nerve does not enhance well?

1.Meatal segment

2.Labirinthene (Fallopian) segment

3.Geniculate ganglion

4.Tympanic segment

5.Mastoid segment
