Case 29

 A forty one-year-old male came to our hospital suffering from fever over 38 centigrade, transient unconsciousness, general fatigue and diarrhea over 10 times a day. The diarrhea began two days ago. He felt abdominal expansion, pain and feverish. He endured the situation at home all day, hoping to speedy recover. As the diarrhea still continued, he was too exhausted to respond someone’s asking. He could dine little except water and three slices of water melon. He maintained consciousness but could not rise up for chest X ray. Medical findings; blood pressure 100/60 mmHg; pulse 60/ min; SaO2 85 %. Although body temperature was 36.6 centigrade, he had much sweating. Laboratory test; Total bilirubin 3.6 mg/dL, White blood cells 7100/mm3, Neutrophils 79%, CRP 7.9 mg/dL, Red blood cells 5400000/mm3. He consented to receive contrast-enhanced CT for further examination. Stool culture test revealed positive campylobacter species three days later.

What are the possible findings about campylobacter infection ?

a. Ingestion of half-burned chicken or raw meat of domestic pigs or cow

b. Latent term: 2 to 5 days

c. Colon wall swelling with three layers

d. Water and/or bloody diarrhea

e. Fever over 38 centigrade
